Account Types and Minimums

If you’re looking for a winner when it comes to the number of account types available, the clear winner of this category is Interactive Brokers. However, deciding whether Webull or Interactive Brokers is the better of the two will largely come down to what your online trading or investment needs are. We’ll outline the account types and any applicable minimum balance requirements to give you a clear picture of what’s offered and which of these platforms might be best.

Webull Account Types

Types of Accounts

  • Cash Accounts: Traders have to pay the complete amount for any purchased security. At Webull, traders can use these cash accounts to trade up to option level two.
  • Margin Accounts: Use funds and securities as collateral to buy other securities. These accounts allow traders to leverage investments to maximize returns, but they have the potential for increased losses.
  • Roth IRAs: These tax-advantaged retirement accounts let investors contribute after-tax dollars to save for their retirement plan.
  • Traditional IRAs: Traders can use pre-tax dollars to save up for retirement. They are great tax-advantaged retirement accounts.
  • Rollover IRAs: These are independent retirement accounts that receive funds from a qualified retirement plan and act much like a traditional IRA.
  • Advisor Accounts: Smart Advisors are available for automated and personalized investment services. They can be tailored to your preferred risk tolerance, and you can develop six diversified portfolios.
  • Futures Accounts: Trade futures contracts on the Webull trading app.
  • Entity Accounts: Traders can hold accounts that are in the name of a legal entity, which can be used to conduct trading, hold financial instruments, and manage investments. Examples of entity accounts are partnerships, corporations, or LLCs.

Minimum Balance Requirements

For the most part, you’re not going to deal with minimum balance requirements when using a standard Webull brokerage account. However, there are a few minimum balances you must maintain when you’re dealing with other account types:

  • Unlimited day trading has a $25,000 minimum balance requirement
  • Margin accounts have a minimum balance of $2,000
  • $100 minimum balance for Smart Advisor accounts
  • Trading spreads have a $2,000 minimum balance

Interactive Brokers Account Types

Interactive Brokers offers individual accounts that feature a single account holder and joint accounts that can be shared between two account holders.

Types of Accounts

  • Administrators: Any organization that provides third-party administrative services to other institution accounts.
  • Advisor Accounts: An individual or organization registered advisor that is managing both the client’s money and administration (wealth management).
  • Broker and FCM Accounts: A registered broker or FCM that provides advice and marketing services to their clients.
  • Compliance Officers: Any organization that needs to monitor all or some of their employees’ trading activities.
  • Family Office Accounts: An individual who is a Family Office Manager.
  • Hedge Fund and Mutual Fund Accounts: Single or multiple funds managed by an investment manager.
  • Institutional Hedge Fund Investors: Any institution, such as a foundation, family office, pension, endowment, or fund of funds, that wants to access hedge fund investment opportunities.
  • IRA Accounts: Individual retirement accounts (U.S. tax residents only).
  • Money Manager Accounts: An individual or organization registered advisor that is hired on behalf of another advisor to manage the client’s money.
  • Non-Professional Advisor Accounts: An advisor who is exempt from registration and has 15 or fewer clients.
  • Proprietary Trading Group Accounts: A corporation, limited liability company, partnership, or unincorporated legal structure.
  • Small Business Accounts: A small business corporation, partnership, limited liability company, or an unincorporated legal structure.
  • Trust Accounts: Legally established entity where assets are held by one party for the benefit of another party.
  • UGMA/UTMA Accounts: An individual or entity that manages an account for a minor.

Minimum Balance Requirements

Non-margin accounts at Interactive Brokers aren’t subject to minimum balance requirements, but there are a few exceptions:

  • Cash Accounts: No minimum deposit, but $100 is needed to begin trading, and $2,000 is needed to trade on margin
  • Dedicated Lease Line in Hong Kong: Minimum commission of $500 per month
  • Financial Advisors: Minimum equity balance of $500
  • Individual Accounts: Minimum equity balance of $500
  • Institutional Accounts: Minimum equity balance of $500

Trading Platform Features

Interactive Brokers has a steeper learning curve than Webull due to its focus on well-experienced and active traders. Webull is the better of the two trading apps if you’re looking for something that’s completely intuitive and easy to pick up. The same cannot be said for Interactive Brokers, but it’s largely due to the clientele they serve. If we had to choose a winner for this category, we’d say it’s Webull, but it’s only because it caters to newer traders who are still learning the ropes or getting to that next level in trading.

Webull Platform

Interface and User Experience

Webull’s mobile app is considered by many to be easy to use and intuitive. The same can be said of the website which is designed and functions the same way as the mobile platform. There are a few exceptions to the general idea of Webull being user-friendly and that’s some of the trading tools and the customization options which can be a lot of newer traders to take in—we experienced some of this when we tested out the app for a few weeks to prepare for this review guide.

In terms of overall performance, Webull performs well when it comes to reliability and speed. We didn’t run across any major problems with lagging, errors, or glitches in our time using the website or the app. Webull claims its website execution quality is 98.96% for trades up to 99 shares, making it slightly better than the average trading app with a typical execution quality of 96.95%.

Customization Options

• Personalize your interface by adding, removing, and resizing widgets
• Create multiple layouts for different strategies
• Adjust chart settings with various technical indicators
• Create your ideal trading environment across stocks, cryptos, and options
• Set up custom color schemes

Mobile and Desktop Compatibility

The Webull app can be found at Google Play and the App Store which means that traders can take their trading sessions on the go with most Apple and Android devices. The website can be visited on a desktop computer as well as through a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet. Downloading the app isn’t necessary, but it lets you access Webull without needing an internet connection to do so.

Interactive Brokers Platform

Interface and User Experience

There are four versions of Interactive Brokers that traders can use and choosing the right one largely depends on your skill level and your personal trading needs. IBKR Desktop and IBKR GlobalTrader versions of Interactive Brokers are the two formats that are better for newcomers. These traders can begin with a small cash balance of as little as $1 to begin trading and developing their online portfolios.

If you’re a trader who has more advanced experience, then it’s preferable to choose IBKR Trader Workstation or IBKR Mobile. Traders can access 150 world markets instead of 90. Each comes with a comprehensive suite of dynamic trading tools that result in efficient trades for options, stocks, funds, futures, currencies, and bonds.

Customization Options

Go to the “My Layouts” page on IBKR Desktop to set up custom pages and enjoy these other customization features:

• Build custom indexes for filtering securities based on financial metrics
• Adjust order entry windows with preferred columns
• Configure option chains to show specific put/call displays
• Set up personalized layouts with preferred tools
• Create custom views with specific data fields
• Configure option chains to show specific strike price

Mobile and Desktop Compatibility

Just like Webull, Interactive Brokers can be used on a desktop computer and mobile devices like smartphones or tablets. The downloadable mobile app is available at Google Play and the App Store. There’s not too much more to say—Webull and Interactive Brokers are both fairly comparable in this realm of comparison.

Options Trading Tools

options_tools

It’s no contest when it comes to trading tools—Interactive Brokers has a better mix of advanced tools that work well in high-volume trading environments. This makes sense since the Webull trading tools are more catered to beginners and traders who are looking to break from beginner-level into intermediate status.

Webull

  • Alerts: Get alerts for volume hikes, market news, price targets, and many other events.

  • Rebalance Your Portfolio: Redistribute the current position weighting in your portfolio to allocate money where it needs to be ideally.
  • Recurring Investments: Automatically investing your funds on a recurring schedule can help you set up and execute a predetermined investment strategy.
  • Short Securities Availability: Go to the “Client Portal” tosearch for the availability of shortable securities (IBKR has a Securities Loan Borrow system that is self-service and fully electronic).
  • Strategy Builder: This feature and the Options Chain are great for building common strategies and constructing multi-leg option strategies.
  • Tax Loss Harvesting: Financial advisors can reduce their client’s tax liability by harvesting losses across various assets for multiple clients.
  • Trade in Fractions: Develop a more diversified portfolio by dividing investments among more stocks to turn small cash balances into returns.
  • Volatility Lab: Get data on past and future stock volatility readings, broad market measures, and stats on industry peers.
  • Write Options Tool: Write covered options or buy protective puts quickly by sharing all of your long and short positions.

Fees and Commissions

Webull is a trading app that comes with lower fees and commissions. By comparison, Interactive Brokers has steeper fees, which can be fine for high-volume traders with the resources to take care of it, but less so for newbies or beginners with a smaller amount of available capital. Let’s dive into the fees and commissions found at Webull and Interactive Brokers to give you a good idea of the difference.

Account Fees and Miscellaneous Charges

Webull is notable for not having any inactivity fees, withdrawal fees, or account management costs. This trading app is a good choice for traders and investors who want to keep their operational overhead low.

For the most part, Interactive Brokers is free of account fees, but there are a few withdrawal fees to keep in mind:

  • Returned check fee: $25
  • Check withdrawals: $4 for each withdrawal after the first one per month
  • Wire withdrawals: $10 for each withdrawal after the first one per month
  • Other withdrawals: $1 for each withdrawal after the first one per month
  • DRS withdrawals: $5 per transaction

Discounts for High-Volume Traders

While Webull doesn’t offer discounts for high-volume traders, Interactive Brokers offers volume discounts for active traders on the IBKR Pro platform. You’ll find tiered pricing for options and futures trading using this format. High-volume traders can enjoy lower rates, faster and more price-efficient order execution, and only charge small commissions on stock trades as a reward for their activity on the app.

Market Access

Interactive Brokers offers a wider variety of global markets compared to Webull. It’s the preferred option for active traders and other professionals due to this fact, plus the more advanced order types and deeper liquidity. Webull is more geared toward newer traders and investors, so they don’t offer the greatest market access for traders with considerable experience.

Webull

  • Options: The most common offerings at Webull are commission-free stock and ETF options trading. Index option contracts start out at $0.55.
  • Stocks: Traders can access stock trading on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, the NASDAQ, the Chicago Board of Trade, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
  • Futures: Webull traders can enjoy dealing with futures contracts that come with competitive margins and rates.
  • Money Market Funds: Webull offers Treasury, Government, and Prime Obligation Funds, and they have same-day settlement options.

Interactive Brokers

  • Bonds: Trading bonds at IB includes corporate bonds, US government and municipal securities, CDs, and non-US sovereign bonds.
  • Cryptos: Trade cryptos like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin at Interactive Brokers.
  • Currencies: IB traders also have the opportunity to trade currencies online, like the British Pound, Canadian Dollar, Australian Dollar, and others.
  • ETFs: Interactive Brokers traders include all ETFs in the United States, including SPY and QQQ.
  • Futures: When trading futures contracts at Interactive Brokers, you can access Belgian, Dutch, Italian, and Japanese index options and futures. There are German equity options offered, too.
  • Options: IB traders can deal with equity and index options as well as futures trading.
  • Stock Markets: Stock trading can be done on the New York Stock Exchange, the London Stock Exchange, the NASDAQ, and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Educational Resources and Support

support_and_education

Interactive Brokers is the clear winner when it comes to educational resources, though Webull does a good job in this category, as they cater to newer traders with sound, rudimentary learning materials. Traders will find a more comprehensive range of educational tools at Interactive Brokers with extensive research tools and more advanced investing/trading concepts.

Webull

Educational Resources

  • Resistance Levels: Learn how to read price points where securities tend to face significant selling pressure. Webull offers traders and investors learning on this key indicator, which leads to better technical analysis.
  • Drawing Tools: Learn how to use visual views to a chart to analyze market movements effectively. Traders can learn about market trends and how to make predictions or add comments on the charts they use during their trading sessions.
  • Paper Trading Simulators: Also referred to as demo accounts or stock market simulators, these virtual environments offered at Webull allow traders to practice trading financial assets without using their own money.

Looking over customer feedback at sites like Trustpilot and SiteJabber, the consensus is that Webull is the easiest of the two platforms to learn and navigate effectively. Check out the firsthand user feedback in the section below to get a good picture of how current and former users feel about Webull and Interactive Brokers. To keep things fair and balanced, we included good and bad reviews.

Webull User Feedback

Trustpilot Review—Dated December 16, 2024

“I submitted a request to transfer my portfolio from Trading212 to my WeBull account. Regrettably, they denied my request for unfounded reasons. They stated that they only accept stock transfers with a minimum price of $5 and a market capacity exceeding 300 million (this crucial information was not mentioned or highlighted during the transfer request). Furthermore, all my stocks I wanted to transfer into my Webull are currently traded on Webull platform, but they are very elective . This lack of transparency is deeply disappointing.”

Trustpilot Review—Dated January 9, 2025

“My pending orders were cancelled without my approval, It’s almost impossible to get a refund with this company. The customer care representative are so unfriendly, Navigating to the comp mentioned above in display pic saved me from sudden heart attack. Lost all my money at Webull.”

Marie

SiteJabber Review—Dated June 2, 2024

“Untrustworthy company. Huge delays with payments on Webull and not providing answers but more excuses and further lies. Stay away and don’t trust any positive reviews you see here as well, they only trying to get their new customers to keep falling for their trick so they can steal all their deposits.
I read about all the good work and positive impact gvrrecuperattor.online is having on victims of cryptocurrency scams I knew they were the ones that would surely help recover my funds successfully. I reached out to them and provided them with all of the information that they requested. They are definitely not only very good but also have a lot of experience from having successfully recovered funds from and taken down several crypto scams. I got back all of my funds down to the very last cent.”

Interactive Brokers User Feedback

Trustpilot Review—Dated December 9, 2024

“I’m happy to be a client of IB for several reasons. Here are the main ones: access to quotes almost 24/7 (including overnight trading) , access to various ECNs and products, very useful API, and of course low cost of trades. The only disandvantage for me is that IB does not provide and display odd lots.”

Bob

Trustpilot Review—Dated October 21, 2024

“Buying shares, ETFs is super easy. The summary tables of one’s performance are fantsatic. You can see immediately where you win and lose money and your IRR compared to several indexes. You can buy a very wide variety of financial instruments. Fees are very reasonable. Once you test IBKR, you close all your share accounts in traditional commercial banks for individuals.”

Bernard C.

SiteJabber Review—Dated August 24, 2024

“Interactivebrokers is a FAKE company. Their customer service is very bad and not sufficient. They will continue to encourage you in the beginning to put in more money into their platform, promising high profits in a short period of time. After making profits, getting it out of the platform is nearly impossible without external assistance. I’m glad i took an early step to contact swiftmksolutionss.com for help, and in few days they got my funds restored successfully from this crooks. They saved me big time”
