Summary of Charles Schwab

Charles Schwab was founded by Thomas Peterfy in 1971 and has since become a great low-cost and accessible trading app for more advanced traders. A significant part of its business model is offering fast order execution on top of its lower cost structure. It’s a company that has always emphasized expanding and improving, one of the clearest examples of this being its acquisition of TD Ameritrade in 2020 for $26 billion. Not only does Schwab offer its tools and features, but they can now offer Thinkorswim products, making for a more robust, dynamic online trading experience.

Target Audience

Although Charles Schwab offers the lower fees and educational resources you might find with a trading app for newer investors, it’s mainly geared toward advanced traders with plenty of experience who need the instruments and trading tools needed to maintain active trading sessions. However, it still comes with lower fees and commissions that work well for traders with limited capital but who would still like to actively trade.

  • Commission-free stocks, options, and ETFs
  • Access research reports, equity ratings, and market commentary

Types of Accounts

  • Advisor Accounts: Smart Advisors are available for automated and personalized investment services. They can be tailored to your preferred risk tolerance, and you can develop six diversified portfolios.

  • Roth IRAs: These tax-advantaged retirement accounts let investors contribute after-tax dollars to save for their retirement plan.
  • Traditional IRAs: Traders can use pre-tax dollars to save up for retirement. They are great tax-advantaged retirement accounts.

Minimum Balance Requirements

Standard brokerage accounts at Webull don’t come with any minimum balance requirements, but some of the other accounts offered have some conditions that must be satisfied by traders before they can use them:

There are a few account types outside the standard brokerage accounts at Schwab that carry a minimum balance requirement:

  • Schwab Managed Portfolios: $25,000 minimum balance

Trading Platform Features

From a usability standpoint, Webull is the better of the two trading apps due to its platform being more visually appealing and being designed primarily for newcomers to online trading. It definitely has the more intuitive design of the two apps/websites, though Charles Schwab has great ease of use for the more experienced traders it’s known for having.

Webull Platform

Interface and User Experience

The interfaces for the Webull website and mobile app are easy to use and we didn’t have many problems navigating the menus and tabs to figure out how everything worked. It greatly helps that the website and mobile app are designed alike making it so there’s not a major learning curve going from one format to the next. In our time testing Webull, we noticed that some features could be a little advanced for newbies initially (some of the customization options and a few of the trading tools), but they can be figured out relatively quickly.

Both formats are noticeably void of major errors, glitches, or lagging—Webull was reliable and the speed of the website and app were great. After doing some research into the experiences of current and former users, we discovered that the website execution quality is 98.96% for trades up to 99 shares. This puts Webull at a better execution quality than the average trading app which sits at around 96.95%.

Customization Options

• Adjust chart settings with various technical indicators
• Create multiple layouts for different strategies
• Personalize your interface by adding, removing, and resizing widgets
• Set up custom color schemes
• Create your ideal trading environment across stocks, cryptos, and options

Mobile and Desktop Compatibility

Like most options trading apps, Webull is available at Google Play and the App Store. The download is free and the platform can be used on Apple and Android devices like smartphones or tablets. The Webull website can be used on a home computer but also via the web browser on a mobile device. Traders and investors can use the site on their smartphone or tablet without having to download the app.

Charles Schwab Platform

Interface and User Experience

Each form of Charles Schwab (website and mobile app) has clear layouts, simple menus, and easy-to-use functions. The Schwab and Thinkroswim tools are intuitively designed for the best ease of use.

Aside from a few menu configuration changes, the Charles Schwab website and mobile app largely function the same way. The Schwab mobile app lets traders view all the relevant information they need for their sessions such as news, charts, balances, research ratings, and quote summaries with excellent accessibility.

Customization Options

An appealing part of Charles Schwab for many traders is that they can choose how they want their user interface to look. This includes being able to tailor their watchlists for customized strategies and designing a personalized column layout that works for their trading sessions. Plus, traders can enjoy the following:

• Indices: Displays a customizable list of indices and the price in the title bar of the software, including change from close, and percent change from close for each.
• Balances: Displays basic balance information for your account, such as buying power, change in value, margin available, and more.
• Quick Quotes: Provides access to Level I quotes for stocks, options, and indices.
• Quick Trade: Allows you to quickly enter a stock or option trade in StreetSmart.com without going through the Trade tabs.
• Order Status: View the status of your open orders.

Mobile and Desktop Compatibility

Like Webull, Charles Schwab is available at Google Play and the App Store. The download is free and traders can use Schwab on their Apple or Android devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.). Access the Schwab website from a home computer or through your mobile device’s web browser. Traders can enjoy Schwab and its services via their smartphone or tablet without having to download the app.

The app is so well-received that it was awarded the Best Investing Platform Overall in 2024 by U.S. News.

Options Trading Tools

options_tools

Charles Schwab and its emphasis on active, professional traders result in this platform having the upper hand when it comes to options trading tools. Check out the trading tools that are available at Webull and Schwab to get a good idea of what kind of services are available to online traders in these spaces.

Webull

  • Account Types: Webull traders can enjoy several different account types for their trading goals, including generic cash or margin accounts as well as IRA or futures accounts.
  • Alerts: A helpful trading tool for active traders is the specialized Webull alerts that keep users in the know about important events like market news, volume hikes, and price targets.
  • Extended Hours: One of the nicer elements of using Webull is that you can trade pre-market and after-hours when the market closes, which can lead to expanded trading or investment opportunities.
  • Order Types: Users can take advantage of bracket orders, limit orders, stop orders, or take profit orders, whatever is needed for Webull traders to reach their goals for each online session.
  • Track Your Portfolio: Investors can check on their cash balance, their market value on investments, or their account value while managing their portfolios.
  • Watchlists: Another benefit of Webull is being able to design several watchlists to keep you in the loop on when securities become available that you’re interested in trading.
  • Wide Range of Investment Products: Webull is designed for newer traders, so they don’t offer as many trading instruments as some of the other trading apps. However, they do offer options, stocks, ETFs., futures, and commodities trades, which is decent considering its more limited product range.

Charles Schwab

  • All-in-One Trade Ticket: Use a single window to conduct options strategies or equity trades. Plus, users can build orders and enter them into their portfolios using one convenient ticket design. Schwab users can also add as many as eight stocks or ETFs using the all-in-one trade ticket.
  • Conditional Orders: Determine all the terms and conditions on all trades’ entry and exit points. Conditional orders are useful for automating risk management and making more streamlined profit-taking strategies.
  • Schwab Network: This portion of the website/mobile app is where users can get data-driven analysis and market news interpretations. Access the Schwab network through live-streaming shows and on-demand clips.
  • Streaming Market Data: This tool helps traders view real-time market data during trade ticket preparation or through watchlists.
  • Thinkorswim Products and Tools: Charles Schwab extends these tools to its users, like drawing and charting tools, great technical indicators analysis tools, and in-depth studies. One of Thinkorswim’s more prominent features is PaperMoney, a virtual trading environment for practicing strategies.
  • Trading Hours: Members of Schwab can trade securities 24 hours a day and 5 days a week.
  • Watchlists: Save as many as 50 watchlists and view up to 300 symbols on each. This feature helps investors keep an eye on the securities they like to buy or sell during their trading sessions.

Fees and Commissions

Traders and investors will generally spend less money operating Webull compared to Charles Schwab. Webull has commission-free option, stock, and ETF trades, while Schwab charges its users a small fee for each options contract they deal with ($0.65). Over time, this fee for each contract can add up, making Schwab the platform where you’ll incur the most fees between the two trading apps. If you’re looking for minimal overhead, it’s best to use Webull.

Account Fees and Miscellaneous Charges

Webull doesn’t have any inactivity fees, withdrawal fees, or account management costs—again, this platform is perfect for traders looking to keep their operational overhead low. The same can be said for Schwab, too, despite charging the fee for each options contract. They don’t deal with account management costs or activity/withdrawal fees.

Discounts for High-Volume Traders

Those using the Charles Schwab Pro Plan experience special pricing and handling for large block transactions (orders of 10,000 shares or more). They can also get discounts on per-contract options trading through the Pro Plan’s tiered pricing.

On the other hand, Webull doesn’t offer discounts for high-volume traders.

Market Access

Charles Schwab has a much more established presence in the online trading market with wider access to more markets and advanced trading tools. This gives them the clear upper hand over Webull when it comes to market access. Traders can simply deal with more instruments and investment opportunities using Charles Schwab and it makes sense because Webull is a better fit for newer investors.

Webull

  • Options: The biggest products that traders are looking for are commission-free options, stocks, and ETFs. Index option contracts begin at a rate of $0.55, not to be confused with regular options contracts.
  • Stocks: Enjoy stock trading on the NASDAQ, the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and the Chicago Board of Trade.
  • Futures: Buy or sell commodities or shares (futures contracts) at a fixed price for delivery at a future date. The futures contracts found at Webull come with competitive margins and rates.
  • Money Market Funds: Trade money market funds like the Treasury, Government, and Prime Obligation Funds. Each comes with the same-day settlement options.

Charles Schwab

  • Cryptos: Highly speculative and carrying a high level of risk, crypto trading is offered at Schwab for investors who are interested in a decentralized asset. A few of the cryptos featured include Bitcoin and Ethereum, among others.
  • ETFs: Trade internationally invested exchange-traded funds online with Charles Schwab.
  • International Stocks: Traders can enjoy some international fare, including foreign ordinaries, American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), and Canadian stocks.
  • Mutual Funds: Invest in mutual funds with concentrations in international holdings.
  • REITs: Schwab members can invest in Real Estate Investment Trusts and other non-traditional investments.
  • US Stocks: Trade stocks on listed US exchanges and over-the-counter stocks on the Charles Schwab trading app.

Educational Resources and Support

support_and_education

Charles Schwab, again, is the clear winner in terms of customer support and the educational resources available in the help center. There are more ways for customers to get in touch with the service center and the educational tools are aimed at more sophisticated traders, so they are more sophisticated learning materials. The one area where these two platforms are comparable and both deserve some praise is that they have paper trading simulators that let newer traders practice strategy.

Webull

Educational Resources

  • Paper Trading Simulators: One of the best educational tools available is the paper trading simulator (demo account or stock market simulator), which lets traders practice with a virtual account balance without putting their own money at risk.
  • Resistance Levels: One of the key indicators that leads to better technical analysis, this tool teaches traders to read and learn the price points where securities face significant selling pressure.
  • Drawing Tools: Drawing tools are great for investors who are learning to make predictions. Use visual views and charts to analyze market movements effectively and add comments on the charts.

Trading Experience and User Reviews

It’s tough to pick a usability winner between these two trading apps because both come with an intuitive design which makes them easy to learn and use for effective options trading. Webull and Charles Schwab offer a sleek mobile trading experience (something we witnessed firsthand checking out both of the apps for a week or more) and this is supported by the customer feedback we consulted at SiteJabber and Trustpilot.

Trader Sentiment

To keep our comparison of Webull and Charles Schwab honest and unbiased, we included good and bad feedback from these review sites. We hope to give you a clear picture of how people generally feel about these trading apps. Some of these reviews give some key insights into the usability factor, too.

Webull User Feedback

Trustpilot Review—Dated December 16, 2024

“I submitted a request to transfer my portfolio from Trading212 to my WeBull account. Regrettably, they denied my request for unfounded reasons. They stated that they only accept stock transfers with a minimum price of $5 and a market capacity exceeding 300 million (this crucial information was not mentioned or highlighted during the transfer request). Furthermore, all my stocks I wanted to transfer into my Webull are currently traded on Webull platform, but they are very elective . This lack of transparency is deeply disappointing.”

Ameer Oudah

Trustpilot Review—Dated January 9, 2025

“My pending orders were cancelled without my approval, It’s almost impossible to get a refund with this company. The customer care representative are so unfriendly, Navigating to the comp mentioned above in display pic saved me from sudden heart attack. Lost all my money at Webull.”

Marie

SiteJabber Review—Dated June 2, 2024

“Untrustworthy company. Huge delays with payments on Webull and not providing answers but more excuses and further lies. Stay away and don’t trust any positive reviews you see here as well, they only trying to get their new customers to keep falling for their trick so they can steal all their deposits.
I read about all the good work and positive impact gvrrecuperattor.online is having on victims of cryptocurrency scams I knew they were the ones that would surely help recover my funds successfully. I reached out to them and provided them with all of the information that they requested. They are definitely not only very good but also have a lot of experience from having successfully recovered funds from and taken down several crypto scams. I got back all of my funds down to the very last cent.”

Charles Schwab User Feedback

SiteJabber Review—Dated May 18, 2023

“Avoid Schwab at all cost. They are the most crooked brokers and bankers in the industry. They do not have the client’s best interest and only enrich themselves. They block access to your money and fail to make timely trades or distributions. They lure you in with phony IPO’s that immediately lose half their value and never recover. Stay away!”

Ron R.

Trustpilot Review—Dated November 5, 2024

“I love this bank! No fees for having an account, free ATM withdrawals, full refunds for ATM withdrawals outside the US, and an easy-to-use mobile app. Zelle is also great because I can receive donations from others who are associated with different banks. Their customer service is awesome. Of the 4 or 5 times I’ve had to call them for an issue, whether it was for a user interface problem or an unauthorized purchase, they have been wonderful and were eager to help me solve the issue (and got it solved right there and then).”

Kathryn Cedeno

Trustpilot Review—Dated December 13, 2024

“This is my latest interaction with the CS web platform. Over the past four years, I have had nothing but headaches dealing with issue after issue that other investment platforms I utilize provide in just a few clicks. The latest one was the fact that the platform will not provide consolidated accounts statements. That’s asinine! Rather they suggest that I download each account statement individually and collate in .pdf.”

Alex

Community and Resources

The community tab is where it’s at when you’re using Webull. Users can ask questions, create polls, or discuss trading strategies. It’s a great place to connect and share ideas in a communal setting. Some of the most well-known community features here are the newsfeed, stock ticker, and polls.

Charles Schwab doesn’t have a dedicated community forum, but traders at Schwab can raise support via social media platforms. These are places where traders can share ideas or ask questions about the Charles Schwab trading platform.

Schwab offers better features that are catered to advanced traders, like the all-in-one trading ticket, conditional orders, streaming market data, and access to Thinkorswim’s suite of tools and products.
  • Fees/Commissions: Webull has the commission-free option for stock and ETF trades, while Schwab charges its users a small fee for each options contract they deal with ($0.65).
  • Market Access: Trading at Webull, you get access to some simple markets like stocks, options, and ETFs, while Schwab offers a lot more—cryptos, international stocks, mutual funds, and REITs (real estate investment trusts).
  • Educational Resources: While both platforms offer paper trading simulators, Charles Schwab still offers better learning tools and resources like market news, asset management, and the US Investing Education Center.
  • Ease of Use: Webull and Charles Schwab are each intuitively designed for their respective clientele, making each great in terms of ease of use.
