That is the practical meaning of gamma risk. It is not just an abstract Greek on an options chain. It is the risk that an option’s price sensitivity changes so quickly that the trade behaves differently from the plan, especially when the contract is near the money and close to expiration.

With 0DTE options, that risk matters because the clock is nearly gone. There is little time for the position to recover, adjust, or wait for a cleaner setup. The useful question is not whether 0DTE options are good or bad. It is whether the trader understands how fast the contract can change before entering.

The 0DTE Problem Is Speed, Not Just Direction

Many traders understand that a long call needs the underlying to rise or a long put needs it to fall. The harder lesson is that a 0DTE option often needs the move to happen soon enough and cleanly enough to overcome the contract’s remaining time value, bid-ask spread, and volatility expectations.

This is why a trader can be directionally right and still have a poor outcome. The underlying may move in the expected direction, but not far enough. It may move after the option has already lost too much value. Or the trader may enter during a fast market when the spread makes the real exit price worse than the screen midpoint.

Volatility also belongs in the review. A same-day catalyst can make option premiums look exciting before the event, but once uncertainty changes, the contract can reprice even if the underlying did not move in a simple straight line.
